Most youth sports programs focus on sportsmanship and healthy, active living and positive competition. We have redefined
our
youth sports program to accomplish not only the latter but also to provide the framework and delivery vehicle for youth to make wise decisions, choose positive paths,
and grow up competent, caring and responsible through the integration of the Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Assets.
Research indicates building strong kids in spirit, mind and body will build strong families and communities in the future. YMCA sports programs and classes are designed with the “games approach” to keep more children active throughout each session in addition to making learning and skill development fun. Success is not measured in wins and losses or goals or points scored. Success is measured in being involved and learning more about the sport, being respectful and having good sportsmanship.
The YMCA Sports Program is a vehicle by which
we teach children how to become positive members
of the community in addition to sport skills.
The intent of the YMCA youth sports program is to teach children about teamwork, good sportsmanship and new skills, develop and maintain positive relationships with their peers, provide them with positive role models, and also provide the framework they need to succeed in life as constructive members of the community.
Our programs also work to teach youth to lead active lifestyles and to carry that with them throughout their lives. Research suggests that children who are exposed to the eight categories of the 40 Developmental Assets, are more likely to develop an appreciation of personal health and fitness, are less likely to engage in negative behavior, and are more likely to choose positive paths and grow up to be caring and responsible members of the community.
